<Forget the narrative; when deciding which tv series to indulge in, you need to be smart. How intense is it going to get? How are your feelings? With how much gravity do you wish to immerse yourself within the tv world? Here’re the best shows for every mood.
‘I have zero attention span and want to feel like I’m hanging out with my pals’
Broad City – the duo’s antics feel like home. Shared flat rental home. Broad City is witty and fast-paced whilst the plot ambles ahead at a leisurely pace, leading to a viewing experience that fits brilliantly with meandering Whatsapp conversation, and instagram scrolling. A romp of ridiculousness, gross conduct and genuine friendship, Broad City is a celebration and will suffice as the janitor for your feelings. Check out Please Like Me and Girls (now running its sixth, apparently final) for similar cuddly vibes.
‘Partied last night and not ready to partake in reality’
You partied, it was great, now you’re alone and the creeps are setting in. Why did you do it? Prosecco is not your friend. You’re fine — you just need to focus on something that overpowers the ghoulies. You need something other worldly that will also eg for your return. Stranger Things, The OA and American Horror Story all deliver blanket hugging comfort and mind bending freak fests that will leave no room in your sloth like brain for real life anxieties. The eighties style, genuine auteurship and abundance of chaos give all of these series’ the perfect weight to combat a hangover.
‘Hassle-free escape the stress of everyday life, thank you’
The working day was long and your weekend has disappeared over the horizon. The brain could do with an intellectual injection (but reading is a little too much for your poor brain). The answer lies in Netflix original, The Crown. Depicting the early reign of Queen Elizabeth II, the drama progresses more subtly than the court of the tea party, and the viewer need not worry about letting the plot pass them by. Don’t let the leisurely pace fool you, the series has a velvety, weighty mood to pull everyday stresses into an elegant bouquet . Best enjoyed on weekday evenings at moderate doses of about one and a half episodes. Add a small glass of red in an oversized wine glass for elegant perfection. Anything David Attenborough inspired will also fit this category wonderful. Gorge on Planet Earth and Cosmos if you somehow haven’t already.
‘In for the long haul’
Speculation, theories and unexpected plot twists. When you’re ready for the biggest shows the 21st Century has to offer, you’re in for commitment – whether you plan to sit for 1 hour or 14 isn’t the key. But you need to have your brain geared up. Reading forums online, joining the international conversation is part of the game and being a step ahead of the unpredictable twists is a challenge worth seeing to. Westworld and Game of Thrones unsurprisingly win at this game, but check out Peaky Blinders, or The Man in the High Castle for unfalteringly addictive series commitment.>
